Our office promotes proper oral hygiene as one of the most important things you can do for your teeth and gums. Healthy teeth not only enable you to look and feel good, but they also allow you to eat and speak properly. Dr. Bevers knows that maintaining good oral health is important to your overall well-being. Daily preventive care, including proper brushing and flossing, will help stop problems before they develop.

Between your regular visits to the dentist, there are simple steps you can take to greatly decrease the risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease and other dental problems.

SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO TO PREVENT TOOTH DECAY:

  • Brush thoroughly twice a day and floss daily
  • Eat a balanced diet and limit snacks between meals
  • Use dental products containing fluoride, including toothpaste
  • Rinse with a fluoride mouth rinse if advised to do so
  • Visit Dr. Bevers regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months

DENTAL CLEANINGS

To maintain oral health, you should plan to have a professional dental cleaning performed by a dentist or dental hygienist. Most dental cleanings take about 30 minutes and should be performed every six months to prevent excessive plaque buildup. If left untreated, plaque can lead to unhealthy gums and tooth decay.

Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are performed by Registered Dental Hygienists.  Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:

  • Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface.  Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
  • Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth.  It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva.  The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums.  This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease!

THE FOLLOWING ARE INDICATIONS OF GOOD ORAL HYGIENE:

  • Your teeth are clean and free of debris
  • Gums are pink and do not hurt or bleed when you brush or floss
  • Bad breath is not a constant problem

DENTAL EXAM

A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by Dr. Bevers at your initial dental cleaning  At regular check-up exams, Dr. Bevers and hygienist will include the following:

  • Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radiographs): Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss.  X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions.
  • Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Gum disease evaluation: Check the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
  • Examination of tooth decay: All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay with special dental instruments.
  • Examination of existing restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, etc.
